Many of you were taken by the doors at Almudena Cathedral. I returned to the church and took more photos, inside and out, though not of the other doors, as they were open and poorly lighted.
I’ve got a slew of images to share with you and well as a few stories. I hope to have a series of posts next week.
As for Almudena Cathedral… Until 1561, Toledo was the capital of Spain. However, when the capital moved to Madrid, the seat of the Catholic Church in Spain remained in Toledo. Strangely enough, Madrid had no cathedral. Wikipedia says plans were discussed not long after the capital moved, however ground wasn’t broken until 1879. The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) interrupted construction, which was not resumed until 1950. It would be 43 years more before the Cathedral would be consecrated by Pope John Paul II.
