This news week went from bad to worse. First, it was 9-11 anniversary week. Then, on the anniversary, Islamist mobs stormed the U.S. Embassy in Egypt. Then al-Qaida used an angry mob as cover to assassinate the U.S. ambassador to Libya.
Then we find out that the pre-text for rioting was a 14-minute trailer for a movie called “Innocence of Muslims” that portrays Mohammed as a homosexual, among other things. The film is a misguided and poorly executed (and those words are not strong enough) attempt to discredit Islam.
I am ashamed to say that the film was reportedly made by a company called Media for Christ AND that its producer gave a fake name and lied when he said he was an Israeli Jew. He’s actually an Egyptian Coptic Christian with a fraud conviction (who may have violated probation by making the film). He also allegedly lied to the cast and crew, who thought they were making a film called “Desert Warrior,” which script had no reference to Mohammed. When they saw the finished film, they say their lines had been dubbed.
Now I am angry. He dares blaspheme the name of Jesus the Messiah AND to blame the Messiah’s kin, the Jews?! I wanted to put “stupid Christians” in the headline, but Jesus said that would put me in danger of hell fire.
When Jesus sent out the 12 disciples to minister, He said: “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” These guys were neither. They decided to act like wolves instead. (I’m working on channeling this anger into prayer for these.)
To quote author Joel C. Rosenberg (via Twitter):
Islam is false teaching. But I oppose all mockery of any religion or ridicule its followers. Jesus commands Christians to love our enemies.
Now that my rant is out of the way, let’s look at U.S. leadership response and what this means for the the West and the Middle East and the long-distance Obama-Netanyahu spat from earlier in the week.
West’s ignorance and denial, not Islam’s immaturity
The amateur video has been blamed for what became one big anti-American demonstration in more than 20 countries. Hillary Clinton was quick to exonerate the government of Libya for the death of the U.S. ambassador, pointing instead to a “small, savage group.”
In the same Reuters article, Clinton is quoted as saying:
“I ask myself, how could this happen? How could this happen in a country we helped liberate, in a city we helped save from destruction? This question reflects just how complicated and, at times, how confounding the world can be.”
Her question betrays an ignorance about the history and goals of Islam as does an opinion piece from CNN.com headlined “Arab Spring nations don’t yet grasp freedom of dissent.”
No, sir. You don’t yet grasp Islam. There is no such thing as dissent. There is only adherence or dhimmitude(subservience) or even death, as proclaimed on the signs held by protestors around the world, even Sydney, Australia.
And because of President Obama’s rhetoric of appeasement, the Islamists get bolder and bolder and are now holding the world hostage whenever they feel their honor has been injured.
Don’t forget Iran and Israel
Speaking of appeasement, early in the week, before 9-11, Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu pushed Obama for red lines on Iran. Both Obama and Clinton basically said “no.” Netanyahu pushed back hard. Thursday, Obama said the red line is a nuclear weapon.
But Friday, a headline caught my eye.
The idea has just been reinforced today by U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panneta.
What I hear is “We refuse to define consequences for violating boundaries. Actually, we also refuse to set boundaries.”
Iran is a bully which constantly threatens a whole nation with annihilation. International monitors publicly admit Iran is probably building a nuclear bomb. Yet, nobody but the one being threatened takes the bully seriously.
Israel is asking an influential friend to set boundaries, consequences for the bully. The friend, the United States, is refusing. The U.S. thinks talking to the bully in a peaceful tone will change Iran’s mind. Again, the West refuses to see that Islamic regimes do not operate by the same rules. It’s no wonder Israel’s Netanyahu is so upset. It’s almost 1930s Germany all over again. Why doesn’t the world take the Hitlers seriously?
So, everything we see in the news is in the natural. We believers in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and His Messiah Jesus need to remember that we are just seeing a spiritual war manifesting into the natural realm.
Satan wants to be God; hates Israel; hates the believers of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; hates the Messiah Jesus. He tried to kill the Jews in ancient times to keep Messiah from coming. Now he tries to kill the Jews because he thinks it’ll keep Jesus from returning (Jesus doesn’t come back until the Jews call for Him. See Matthew 23:39, Hosea 5:15, Zechariah 12:10).
I lay all this out so that the LORD may use it to show you how to pray. These threats are real, and yet God is in control. God also wants us to participate in our defense and in His final redemption of planet earth when Messiah returns to rule and reign — through prayer and worship and preaching the gospel of the kingdom.
